Of all the states in the USA, North Carolina has one of the coolest nicknames: the “Tar Heel State”. According to historians, North Carolina received that nickname because of all the turpentine (and other goods) being produced in the state in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is also the nickname of the sports teams of the University of North Carolina, which is located in Chapel Hill.
